The original rock and roll star was not Elvis Presley, but Sister Rosetta Tharpe
Rock and roll music first became popular in the 1950s, but ten years before that Sister Rosetta Tharpe thrilled audiences by creating her own distinct sound. With her powerful singing voice and revolutionary guitar skills, she performed complex, lighting-fast guitar solos. She was one of the first musicians to use a distorted electric guitar sound and her skill and charisma whipped crowds.
