Humans can hold their breath for as long as 20 minutes
Most adults can only hold their breath for up to a minute. But freedivers – swimmers who go underwater without a snorkel or aqualungs – can train their bodies to last 20 minutes without breathing. Before a dive, freedivers they practise relaxing their bodies completely. This makes them need less oxygen.
