A bunch of celery leaves marked an athlete’s crowning achievement
The Ancient Greeks held four big sports competitions, known together as the Panhellenic Games. The winners weren’t presented with bronze, silver, or gold, but with wreaths made from different leaves.
For the Olympic Games an olive wreath was used while the Pythian and Isthmian Games used laurel and pine wreaths respectively. Finally, a wild celery wreath was used for the Nemean Games.
