To rebuild coral reefs, scientist may play recordings of healthy reefs
A healthy reef is full of noise. Reef fish munch, grunt and even whoop. These sounds attract new creatures to the reef. Corals feed on nutrients in fish droppings and scientists hope that damaged reefs will recover more quickly if they can attract young fish – and their nutritious droppings. Experiments have shown that playing a recording of a healthy reef attracts TWICE as many young fish to live there.
