A lick of ice cream ... could cost you your life!
In the 19th century, in cities such as London, ice cream was sold in tiny glasses called 'penny licks' that were licked clean, then reused without being washed. Eventually this practice was linked to the spread of a deadly lung disease, called tuberculosis, which was passed through saliva from person... to person. Fortunately the waffle cone was invented in 1904 and penny licks were banned.
