Fact of the week
15 May 2023
Rain as red as blood once fell in India.
From July to September 2001, red drops fell in the southern Indian stat of Kerala. Streets were flooded with red water and hanging laundry was stained red. Scientists have long disagreed about what caused this. The most convincing explanation is that red algae spores blew all the way from somewhere in Europe to Kerala, then fell as rain.
