Caribbean mermaids often confused Christopher Columbus.
While sailing across the Atlantic Ocean in January 1493, the famous sailor saw three mermaids from his ship. However, Columbus was actually seeing animals called manatees. Scientists think that centuries of sailors’ accounts of mermaids and mysterious women of the sea were probably manatees, seals and another type of sea mammal called a dugong.
