The Company
Usborne is an independent, family business, creating books which spark curiosity in children of all ages. We only publish books for children, so we come at the world from a kid's point of view: all our books are written in their language and designed for their curious eyes. The majority of Usborne books are created in-house by a large team of in-house writer/editors and designers. From the bestselling That’s not my… series of touchy-feely books for babies, to groundbreaking non-fiction to help children understand complex subjects, such as First Questions and Answers: What is racism? or Philosophy for Beginners. From activity books like the hugely popular Magic Painting and Sticker Dolly Dressing series, to tales to captivate the imagination such as Forgotten Fairy Tales of Brave and Brilliant Girls. Whilst the company is now a market-leader in children’s publishing and one of the best-known brands in children’s books, the company retains a friendly and familial feel. If you want to work somewhere close-knit enough for people to know your name, but which has a first-class reputation around the world, Usborne is the place for you.
The Team
The UK Marketing & Publicity Team provides support to the UK Trade Sales Team and their customers by creating meticulously-crafted campaigns which stimulate demand for Usborne books. From the materials they produce for the sales team to present to trade accounts (ranging from supermarkets to independent bookshops), to the consumer-facing print and digital advertisements, the social media activity, the press coverage and events which encourage families to seek out Usborne books, the UK Marketing & Publicity Team is instrumental to getting Usborne books into the hands of children across the UK.
The Role
This role focuses solely on Usborne’s award-winning, children’s baby books, activity & novelty books, non-fiction as well as the fiction books written by our inhouse writer/editors. The Marketing Manager will work closely and collaboratively with other marketers and publicists, the in-house team of writer/editors and the UK Trade Sales team, to plan and execute effective and impactful campaigns with stand-out creative flair, which demonstrate a deep knowledge of the books and their audience, leading to increased book sales.
Usborne non-fiction, baby, activity & novelty titles are the backbone of Usborne’s publishing. The Marketing Manager will play an integral part in the continuing success and progression of these award-winning titles and series. As well as continuing to develop the best-selling brand series such as That’s Not My…; Sticker Dolly Dressing; Poppy & Sam; Don’t Tickle, the role would encompass producing creative thematic campaigns, title and series campaigns, and leading on producing materials that can be used by Usborne globally.
The Successful Candidate
The successful candidate will ideally have at least three years’ experience in a similar role, independently planning and executing marketing campaigns for a range of books. They will demonstrate a high level of creativity and an energy for coming up with novel approaches, coupled with a detailed and diligent approach to planning and executing multiple campaigns running concurrently. We’re looking for someone with an in-depth knowledge of the publishing process, great market knowledge with an up-to-date understanding of the book trade and trends, and excellent audience insight. This person should have an enthusiasm for working collaboratively as part of a dynamic, close-knit team; the ability to take initiative, think laterally and solve complex problems; an appreciation of the value of feedback and constructive criticism; and a willingness to adapt and change direction as required by the ever-changing landscape of trade publishing. As with all marketing roles, excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, along with impeccable attention to detail and excellent organisational skills.
