Do you know who is referred to as the 'jolly old elf' in an 1823 poem?
In 1823 a much-loved Christmas poem was first published in The New York Troy Sentinel newspaper under the title 'Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas'. Several years later, a New York Professor named Clement Clarke Moore said he had written it – but some people believe it was written by another New Yorker, Henry Livingston Jr. Despite the debate over who wrote the poem, it's clear who the author was describing:
He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself. Santa Claus!
