In 1789, a former slave's autobiography became a UK bestseller
Olaudah Equiano, a former slave, joined the anti-slavery movement in the 1780s and published his autobiography in English, German and Dutch. Europeans thought they were superior to those of African descent and reading Equiano showed them they were wrong and that slavery was immoral.
