Desert dust fertilizes the Amazon Rainforest
Every year, a vast amount of dust, containing a chemical called phosphorus, is blown from the Bodele Depression in Africa out west over the Atlantic Ocean. A lot of it falls into the water, but some is blown 5,000km (3,100 miles) across the ocean and falls onto the Amazon Rainforest where it acts a fertilizer to help plants grow.
