Zero came after one... in the history of counting
Zero is the number that represents nothing. But zero hasn't always existed - people invented it long after they began counting and carrying out mathematical calculations. In the 7th century in India, astronomer Brahmagupta invented rules for a number called shunya, the Sanskrit word for 'empty'. Since then, many different symbols have been used to represent zero.
