    Sustainability

    Sustainability at Usborne

At Usborne, our aim is to create children's books that families love to read, share and keep.

Books don't last forever, but the best books can last a lifetime. That's why making books that last is one of the most important ways we can reduce their environmental impact.

Alongside this, we're continually improving how our books are made – from the materials we use and the suppliers we work with, to the packaging they arrive in.

    How our books are made

Usborne books come in many different formats, from paperbacks and board books to activity books, sticker books and books with sound modules, lights and other components. That means we work with a wide range of materials, including paper, board, inks, varnishes, laminates, adhesives and electronic components.

Paper is by far the biggest material we use. Since 2023, the paper and board used in newly manufactured Usborne books has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®). Most of our books carry the FSC Mix logo, meaning the wood fibre comes from responsibly managed forests, recycled materials and other controlled sources.

    Responsible sourcing and suppliers

We work with trusted printing and manufacturing partners around the world, many of whom we have worked with for many years.

Usborne is also a member of the Book Chain Project, an industry initiative that helps publishers better understand and improve their supply chains. The Book Chain Project provides guidance and tools to improve transparency, including information about the origins of paper fibres, the materials used in inks, glues and varnishes, and the working conditions in the factories where books are made.

Our manufacturing partners are independently audited against recognised standards including Sedex, ICTI and BSCI, covering areas such as working conditions, labour practices and environmental management. They are also required to follow the Supplier Code of Conduct, which is based on internationally recognised frameworks.

We are committed to preventing all forms of modern slavery, forced labour and child labour throughout our business and supply chain. We publish a Modern Slavery Statement each year, and you can also read the publishing industry's shared statement on responsible sourcing practices developed in collaboration with the Book Chain Project.

    Updating our inks

We completed the transition to vegetable oil-based printing inks across our range in 2025. Typically made from soy or linseed oil, these inks contain fewer harmful compounds than traditional mineral-based inks and make paper easier to recycle.

The change required close collaboration with our printing partners, with some updating their equipment to ensure it was compatible with the new inks. We have been delighted with the quality, durability and vibrant colours they produce.

    Packaging and materials

We continually review the materials used in our books and packaging for opportunities to reduce unnecessary plastic, while ensuring our books are protected during transport and built to last.

In recent years we've replaced plastic packaging with paper in many products and introduced alternatives such as bamboo paintbrushes in our Magic Painting books. We continue to look for practical improvements as new materials become available.

Usborne is registered as a large packaging producer in the UK. We collect and report packaging data under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme and contribute towards the costs of collecting and recycling the packaging we place on the market.

    Books with electronic components

Some of our books include electronic components such as sound modules or lights. Where these products contain batteries, they are clearly labelled and designed to meet applicable safety and environmental regulations.

Please recycle batteries and dispose of electrical and electronic products through your local recycling scheme. You can find recycling guidance here. This helps prevent them ending up in landfill, where they can cause harm to the environment.

    Supporting environmental projects

We support climate and nature projects through our partnership with Ecologi. As of 2026, we've funded the planting of more than 20,000 trees, including mangrove restoration projects along the coast of Madagascar, alongside other verified climate and nature projects.

You can find the latest information about the projects we support on our Ecologi profile.

Books to inspire the next generation

Helping children understand the world around them has always been part of what we do. From wildlife and oceans to renewable energy, recycling and climate change, our books encourage children to explore environmental topics, discover the wonders of the natural world and learn how we can all play a part in taking care of our planet. Below is a selection of books that inspire curiosity about our planet and the people, animals and plants that share it.
