Screen-free rainy day activities for kids: Puzzles, painting, stories and more

    Illustration of a rainbow.

Rain outside doesn’t have to mean an afternoon spent staring at a screen. With a few well-chosen books and activities, a gray day can become a chance to draw, solve puzzles, paint, create scenes, investigate the weather, and follow wherever curiosity leads.

The best approach is to have a few different kinds of activities ready. Some kids want to make something. Some want a challenge. Others are perfectly happy investigating why it is raining in the first place.

Here are some screen-free rainy day ideas to try.

    Start with a rainy-day question

If everyone is already watching the rain hit the windows, why not find out what is actually going on outside?

First Questions and Answers: What makes it rain? uses lift-the-flaps to explore the kinds of weather questions young children ask, including where wind comes from and why winter is colder. It also introduces weather facts and simple forecasting ideas, making the rain itself part of the afternoon’s entertainment.

You could keep the conversation going with your own questions. Where are the darkest clouds? Is the rain getting heavier or lighter? What do you think the weather will do next?

Sometimes a good rainy-day activity starts with simply wondering.

Grab a pencil and draw something cute

A pencil and a sheet of paper can go a surprisingly long way.

Step-by-Step Drawing Cute Things gives kids clear illustrated steps for drawing cheerful pictures including cupcakes, clouds, cats, burgers, and bunnies. There is space in the book to practice, but there is nothing to stop a favorite drawing from spreading onto spare paper too.

Once children have followed the steps, encourage them to invent their own variations. Could the cloud wear a hat? Could the bunny run a bakery? Could that smiling cupcake suddenly become the hero of a comic strip?

One drawing has a habit of turning into another.

Add water and watch the colors appear

For kids who would rather paint than draw, water-painting books offer a simple way to get creative.

In First Magic Painting Mermaids, children sweep water over black-and-white designs with the included brush and watch colors appear. The scenes include mermaids singing in the moonlight, exploring an underwater palace, and diving for pearls, and the book includes a waterproof back flap to place beneath the page being painted.

For another underwater option, Magic Color Under the Sea is perfect for younger children.

    Try a puzzle challenge

For children who like having something to figure out, pencil-and-paper puzzles can turn a slow afternoon into a succession of small challenges.

Lots of Pencil and Paper Puzzles includes mazes, secret codes, puzzle games, and two-player activities such as boxes, spaceship, and tic-tac-toe.

Bring on dragons and shiny foil

Sometimes a rainy afternoon needs a little extra sparkle.

Foil Art – Dragons has 10 dragon scenes to decorate with the included foil sheets. Kids peel away shapes to uncover sticky areas, press foil over them, and lift it away to leave a colorful shimmer. The book also contains dragon-themed drawing, coloring, and puzzle pages.

That gives children several ways to keep creating even after the foil decorating is finished.

And, really, if the choice is between another gray cloud and a shimmering dragon, the dragon has a fairly strong case.

    Create your own cozy café

Sticker books work especially well when children enjoy adding details and building up a scene.

The Cozy Cafe Sticker Book follows a busy day at the Cozy Café, from unloading deliveries and preparing food to the lunchtime rush, afternoon tea, and a first-birthday celebration. There are more than 150 stickers for children to use as they complete the scenes.

The finished pages can also provide a starting point for imaginative play. What would be on your own café menu? What would you call it? Who would visit on a rainy afternoon?

A sticker activity can quickly turn into a whole invented world.

Put trucks and diggers to work

Trucks and Diggers Magnet Book comes with 10 truck and digger magnets and five scenes where children can place and rearrange the vehicles. Because the magnets can be moved around, the scenes can be played with again and again.

Children can decide where each vehicle should go, then rearrange everything and invent a completely different scene - no hard hat required.

Settle in with some detailed coloring

For older kids who are ready to spend longer on a creative project, Enchanted Forest is great for ages 7+ and offers another screen-free option for a quiet stretch of a rainy afternoon.

It can be useful to save a more detailed activity like this for the moment when the afternoon naturally slows down and everyone is ready to sit at the table for a while.

Mix and match your rainy-day activities

You don’t need to plan every minute of a rainy afternoon. In fact, it is often more fun not to.

Try moving between different kinds of activities depending on your child’s mood:

    • Feeling curious? Find out what makes it rain.

    • Feeling creative? Draw cute characters or decorate dragons.

    • Want to paint? Add water and reveal an underwater scene.

    • Ready for a challenge? Tackle a puzzle or start a two-player pencil-and-paper game.

    • Want to invent a world? Build a café scene with stickers or move trucks and diggers around with magnets.

    • Looking for something quieter? Settle down with a detailed coloring activity.

The aim isn’t to keep children “busy” every second. It’s to give them interesting starting points and let their own ideas take over.

Because rainy afternoons are made for questions, doodles, puzzles, stories-in-the-making, and the occasional foil-covered dragon.

    Outside: gray skies.

    Inside: plenty to explore.
