World Book Day and Beyond

World Book Day is a fantastic opportunity to open learners’ eyes to a whole world of books, but what about the rest of the year?
Whether it’s as part of your World Book Day celebrations, or simply a library lesson with a twist, explore some of our favourite reading-related activities to spark curiosity all year round.
1. The Book Doctor
Ever alert for a patient in need of something good to read, the Book Doctor (Usborne's founder Peter Usborne), has a prescription that promises learners hours of entertainment, blissful escapism, and awakened curiosity. You guessed it, a good book.
See how you can get your hands on your own printable posters, prescription pads, and glasses to set up a book doctor clinic in your classroom or school library here.
2. Book Swap
The only thing better than getting lost in your favourite book is sharing that experience with a friend. A simple way of doing that is by organising a book swap. Learners can bring copies of their own books to swap, or even swap their top picks from the school library.
3. Book trailers
Why not add a touch of silver screen stardom to your book selections? As part of this classic activity, learners film a trailer for a book they’ve read and would love to share with their friends. It’s great fun and simple to set up.
4. Blind date with a book
What greater love than that of a fantastic book? Ignite your readers’ passion for the written word with a book blind date. Simply wrap a range of fantastic reads you’ll know they’ll enjoy, add a short blurb, and let them fall in love with a new book of their own. You never know – it could become their new favourite.
5. Speed book dating
If Cupid’s arrow is too slow for you – why not organise a speed book dating session in your school library? Simply set up a selection of books to suit all tastes and give your readers five minutes to get to know each one. Who knows? They might find the read of their life.
