How to help a reluctant reader find the right book

A young girl reading a picture book outdoors.

If a child says they do not like reading, it often means they have not found the right kind of book yet. For many reluctant readers, the best books are the ones that feel playful from the very first page: short chapters, plenty of pictures, funny characters, and stories that move quickly. That is why a lot of children do well with series fiction. Once they connect with one book, choosing the next one becomes much easier.

Here are some Usborne books and series that make a strong starting point for reluctant readers.

Look for books that feel fun straight away

One of the biggest barriers for a reluctant reader is the feeling that reading will be hard work. A book that feels lively, visual and inviting can make all the difference.

The Billy and the Mini Monsters series is a great example. These chapter books are perfect for newly independent readers, combining hilarious adventures with not-so-scary monsters. The books are packed with colour illustrations, comic strips, maps and speech bubbles, with action-packed plots designed to appeal to even the most reluctant reader. If a child likes funny chaos and familiar everyday settings, titles from this series, including Billy and the Mini Monsters: Monsters Play Football, can be a very good place to begin.

The Izzy the Inventor books offer another strong route in. This laugh-out-loud chapter book series brings together science, magic and a very lovable unicorn. The books are filled with illustrations and easy-to-read text, making them especially appealing for children who want a story that feels substantial without feeling overwhelming. Across titles such as Izzy the Inventor and the Unexpected Unicorn, Izzy the Inventor and the Curse of Doom, Izzy the Inventor and the Time Travelling Gnome, Izzy the Inventor and the Teeny Tiny Ogres, Izzy the Inventor and the Elf Inspectors, Izzy the Inventor and the Scary Fairy and Izzy the Inventor and the Princess Plot, children get the satisfaction of following a character they know while stepping into a new adventure each time.

    Choose highly illustrated formats

Reluctant readers often gain confidence when the page itself feels manageable.

That is one reason Puzzle Slug stands out. Puzzle Slug and the Intergalactic Poop Robbery is a laugh-out-loud comic-book puzzle adventure full of riotous comedy, lovable characters and problem-solving puzzles. It invites children to help save Puzzle Slug’s planet by solving puzzles as they read, giving the story an interactive feel. For children who enjoy comics, games and humour, this kind of read can feel less like a reading task and more like joining in.

The same is true of the Puzzle Stories titles, including Supershark and the Sneaky Ship Sinkers, Supersquirrel and the Crazy Rain Maker and Superpoodle and the Mega Blaster. Supershark and the Sneaky Ship Sinkers blends text and comic strips, with puzzles to solve along the way, and works brilliantly for shared reading too. That combination can be particularly effective for children who like solving clues, spotting details and staying active while they read.

    Follow a child’s real interests

A reluctant reader is far more likely to keep going if the story taps into something they already love.

For children who enjoy animals and friendship stories, Pia’s Pet Club is a strong option. In Pia’s Pet Club: Puppy Problem, Pia starts a pet club to help her friends look after their animals, and the series is full of funny animal adventures packed with illustrations. Titles such as Pia’s Pet Club: Secret Kitten and Pia’s Pet Club: Guinea Pig Showtime build on that pet-loving world, making the series a natural fit for readers who would rather read about puppies, kittens and guinea pigs than sit through a book that feels too obviously “educational”.

For children who love big personalities and silly humour, the combination of monsters, unicorns, fairy-tale mishaps and outrageous puzzle adventures can be much more inviting than a more traditional chapter book. That is worth remembering when choosing what to try next. The best book for a reluctant reader is not always the most sensible-looking one. Often, it is the one that makes them laugh first.

Series can make reading feel easier

Once a child likes one book, the next reading choice should feel simple. That is one reason series are so useful for reluctant readers. Billy and the Mini Monsters, Izzy the Inventor, Pia’s Pet Club, Puzzle Slug and the Puzzle Stories adventures all give children a familiar reading experience with new stories to move on to. They do not have to start from scratch each time. They already know the style, the tone and the kinds of characters they are going to meet.

That sense of familiarity can quietly build reading stamina and confidence.

A good first step is better than a perfect one

If you are helping a reluctant reader, it can help to think less about reading level alone and more about reading invitation.

Books with illustrations, comic elements, puzzles, humour, animals and fast-moving plots can make reading feel more enjoyable from the start. In this group of Usborne titles, there is a particularly strong mix of those qualities: funny monster adventures in Billy and the Mini Monsters, science-meets-magic storytelling in Izzy the Inventor, pet-filled friendship stories in Pia’s Pet Club, and interactive comic puzzle fun in Puzzle Slug and the Puzzle Stories books.

The aim is not to make a child finish a book as quickly as possible. It is to help them discover that reading can feel funny, satisfying and entirely worth their time.
