Sue Mongredien has her finger perfectly on the pulse of what children enjoy.
Dive into this magical new mermaid series, featuring gorgeously girly illustrations and fabulous ocean adventures from an ever-popular author.
Sue Mongredien has her finger perfectly on the pulse of what children enjoy. It's just about the perfect book for the emerging reader. There are just eighty two pages of text in six chapters with liberal use of illustrations by Maria Pearson so there's nothing too daunting and it won't be too long before our reader has the confidence of having got a proper book under her belt. The vocabulary is challenging but not too difficult and there will be a real sense of achievement by the end of the book.
This isn't just 'a first reading book'. There's a very real story in there which is all the more impressive because it's done in relatively few words. There's magic, there's mystery and just a little spine-tingling danger. It's a story that a young girl is going to return to and reread. Boys will definitely not be quite so keen!
This is an enchanting series from author Sue Mongredien, perfect for children, particularly girls of 7+. When Molly Holmes and her family move to Horseshoe Bay to live with her grandmother, Molly is delighted to receive a pretty shell necklace as a present. But it is no ordinary necklace for it unlocks the door to a magical underwater life - a world where Molly joins the Shell-Keeper mermaids for some magical mermaid adventures whilst the rest of the world sleeps. There are 6 adventures in all with The Enchanted Shell being the first one. Why not follow Molly's further adventures with mermaids Ella, Pearl, Delphi, Coral and Shivana as they help keep the oceans safe from the evil magic of Dark Queen Carlotta.
This is the first book in a series of six by Sue Mongredien and will appeal to all those rainbow fairy fans out there. With its short chapters and fairly simple text it is ideal for developing readers. The plot is straightforward but exciting and leaves you wanting to find out what happens next. It is also an excellent first chapter book to share with younger children. I read this to my four year old daughter who is very much into mermaids at the moment. The chapters were an ideal length to read two a night as a bedtime story. It prompted lots of chat about what would happen next. Although the text is accessible it introduces some interesting vocabulary that might need explaining.
