What does a ‘normal’ night feed really look like?

    Illustration of a starry night.

No two evenings are the same, especially when you are part of the Night Feed Club! It can be validating and reassuring to know there is no such thing as a ‘normal’ nighttime - you are not alone. Hear some of our members share their experience with Night Feeds below, with helpful tips and tricks to try out for your own night feeds...

Try reading touch and feel books

“Nighttime feeds sometimes leave us exhausted, Lara’s one that gets up at least 3 times in the night for a feed. She’s a milk lover! Lara often has her milk and will go back down to rest, but if she doesn’t, our go to is reading. I love reading books to Lara and she loves the Usborne touch and feel books. It keeps us both calm and still rested. We love using white noise and soft lighting. We have a little whale to help with this by a fave brand of ours. The main thing is just enjoying the moment. Cuddle and love, as this isn’t forever!” Lou - @Cornish_mumx

    Try a repetitive nighttime routine

“Since she was just a few months old, Juniper has followed the same nighttime routine. I lay her clothes out, run a warm bubble bath and prep a feed ready for sleepy snuggles! That final feed is our moment to slow down together after a very long day. She drifts off, clutching her muslin - heavy in my arms, before I quietly transfer her into her cot! Even with the inevitable nighttime wake ups, these quiet moments are ours - and they mean everything to me. Once she’s settled, I wind down too, with a warm cup of tea, a hot water bottle and some good TV before the next wakeup call!” Em - @manicfunmum

Try listening to an audiobook for company

“Night feeds are such a weird mix of lonely and lovely. When it’s 3am and the house is quiet, it honestly feels like it’s only me and the baby that exists in the world. There’s something really special about that little bubble - the cuddles, the sleepy feeds, the stillness before the day starts. But at the same time, I know there are so many other mums up doing exactly the same thing, and that’s comforting. I always put an audiobook on, it makes me feel like I’ve got a bit of adult company in the dark.” Dani - @the.essex.mum

    Make lists like Kate!

“It’s 3am and you’ve just started your next night feed. Your baby is cluster feeding or having a growth spurt and you’re exhausted. You need to stay awake enough to feed them but not too awake to not drift back off once they do. So what do you do? You could scroll through Instagram aimlessly or fall down the rabbit hole of the 3am shopping spree. Alternatively, you could try something more productive. Enter the art of list making. It keeps you awake just enough without rebooting your brain fully for the day. Think: baby lists, big life lists (e.g. DIY), fun lists and so on.” Kate - @four_little_flahertys
