Most icebergs are made of ice built up layer by layer, over time. Each layer contains tiny air bubbles that were trapped as the water around them froze. When icebergs melt in the ocean, those bubbles burst and air whooshes to the surface. The fizzing and popping is the sound of centuries worth of air being released from tiny bubbles along the iceberg's sides.
