The longest surfboard was reserved for royalty
In ancient Hawaiian culture, all kinds of people surfed: women and men, rich and poor. Three hundred years ago, anyone could surf on an Alaia (ah-LIE-ah) but only a chosen few could ride an olo (OH-low). An olo was a kind of surfboard about 6m long. Only kings, queens and priests were allowed to use these special surfboards.
