The usual rules of society were abandoned every December during an ancient Roman festival called Saturnalia. There were presents, wild feasting, and masters served food and drink to their slaves. One person, often a slave, was chosen to be the Roman god Saturn. He was the ‘King of Misrule’, in charge of festivities.
