For hundreds of years, women living in part of China’s Hunan Province communicated with each other using Nüshu: a coded writing that they never taught to men, and which men could not read. Instead of using ink and paper, Nüshu was often written using thread stitched into cloth. Women embroidered messages onto handkerchiefs, scarves and fans, which they exchanged with each other.
