Plastic-eating bacteria could help break down plastic bottles
In 2016, a new species of bacteria – Ideonella sakaiensis – was discovered in a recycling plant in Japan. These bacteria actually feed on PET, a plastic that is used to make bottles. The bacteria break down the plastic. They use carbon from the PET as an energy source and leave behind the raw materials needed to make more PET.
