Strange facts about Wimbledon

  • The longest ever tennis match was in the 2010 Wimbledon tournament. John Isner finally beat Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the final set after over 11 hours of play!
  • 142,000 portions of strawberries are eaten during the two-week tournament every year!
  • Ball boys and girls are taken from local schools. Only the cream of the crop make it – they must be nominated by their headteacher and pass a written test and fitness test.
  • Every morning before the gates of Wimbledon open, Rufus the hawk flies around to scare off the local pigeons!
