During the second century, Cai Lun, an official working for the Chinese emperor, is said to have observed wasps making papery nests out of chewed-up wood. Inspired by the wasps, Cai Lun made a paste of pounded mulberry bark, rags and fishing nets. He spread it out on a screen to dry...and peeled off a sheet of paper.
